Weather & Science Channel Shows

In 2013, BluSiren Founder, Amelia Smith, stood on the deck of her then-employer Crowley’s 153 ft. tugboat Nanuq in Valdez, Alaska. She rode along to manage the PR activities surrounding The Weather Channel’s filming of “Heavy Metal Monsters,” which featured the company’s ship assist-and-escort tugs as they escorted laden supertankers (as shown behind her in above image) safely through the Prince William Sound. When the tug hit the Gulf of Alaska to release the tanker, the seas were only around eight ft. She saw orcas playing in the wake on the way home.
But that wasn’t the first time Amelia rode aboard Crowley’s tugs in Alaska. One year earlier, she had boarded Crowley’s 140 ft. tug Aware to support the filming of the Science Channel’s nearly identical show, “Heavy Metal Task Force.” That year, the Gulf showed no mercy: 22-ft. waves and 40 mph winds pummeled the tug and its crew for more than eight hours. Though she did indeed get seasick, Amelia learned that PR isn’t always comfortable and that the show must go on. It did, and so did she.
